In short: Shopify app charges are calculated on a 30-day billing cycle together with your Shopify billing. Fixed-price apps are billed when the charge is added to your next Shopify invoice or when it passes the billing threshold, whichever comes first. When you uninstall an app, future recurring charges stop, but you may still be charged for the current billing cycle. If you want a refund, contact the developer before you uninstall.
If you're thinking about switching to Howdy from another sign-up form app, checking when app charges are billed and how they're handled after uninstalling makes it easier to decide when to switch. There are two things to check: the app's billing cycle and where charges appear on your invoice, and what happens to charges and data when you uninstall.
Key points
- Shopify app charges are calculated on a 30-day billing cycle together with your Shopify billing
- Fixed-price apps are billed when the charge is added to your next Shopify invoice or when it passes the billing threshold, whichever comes first
- For usage-based apps, what you used is added to your next invoice
- When you uninstall an app, future recurring charges stop, but you may still be charged for the current billing cycle
- Some apps store data that can't be restored after uninstalling, so export the data you need beforehand
When are Shopify app charges billed?
Fixed-price app charges are billed when they're added to your next Shopify invoice or when the amount passes a set billing threshold, whichever comes first. For usage-based apps, what you used is added to your next invoice.
Your Shopify subscription is billed every 30 days, and you pay in advance for the next 30 days. App charges are calculated along with this billing, but each app has its own 30-day cycle, so the timing can differ from your Shopify billing date. Depending on the days you used the app, usage-based charges can also be split across more than one invoice.

Where can you see app charges on your invoice?
On the billing page, which you open from Settings in the Shopify admin, you can see both the amount for the current billing cycle that hasn't been paid yet and your past invoices that have been paid. Fixed-price and usage-based app charges appear together on your regular Shopify subscription invoice.
One-time app purchases appear on a separate invoice from your regular invoice. App credits, such as those you receive when you downgrade a paid app partway through a cycle, also appear on your invoice. Some apps are billed directly by the developer instead of through Shopify, and in that case the charges don't appear on your Shopify invoice.

What happens to charges when you uninstall an app?
When you uninstall a paid app, future recurring charges for that app stop. You may still be charged for the billing cycle in progress when you uninstall. If you want a refund, contact the developer before you uninstall.
For apps billed directly by the developer instead of through Shopify, cancel separately from uninstalling, by changing the billing settings in the app or by contacting the developer directly. When you migrate to Howdy from another sign-up form app, checking the charges for the billing cycle and how to cancel any external billing before you switch makes it easier to decide when to switch.

What happens to your data and reinstalling after you uninstall?
When you uninstall, the app's access to your data is revoked, and what happens to the data the app stored depends on the app. Some apps store data that can't be restored, so export the data you need before you uninstall.
For apps that add code to your theme, check whether any extra steps are needed before you uninstall, by reading the App Store listing or contacting the developer.
Automations, integrations, and store features that depended on the app stop as soon as you uninstall it. Most apps can be reinstalled, but your previous settings and data might not be restored. To reinstall, select the uninstalled app from the list of apps in Settings in the Shopify admin, and if it meets the compatibility requirements, select Install. How customer data is handled and how to check app permissions are covered in How to check what customer data Shopify apps can access: permissions and what happens after uninstalling.
