How to set up Facebook login in Shopify: steps to create a Meta app

Diagram of the steps to set up Facebook login in Shopify and Meta for Developers

In short: To add Facebook login to Shopify customer accounts, start connecting Facebook from Settings > Customer accounts in the Shopify admin, create an app and configure OAuth in the Meta for Developers dashboard, and then enter the App ID and App secret it issues in the Shopify admin. Finally, click Turn on on the Sign in with Facebook page in the Shopify admin, and customers can sign in with their Facebook account.

Once you finish these steps, an option to sign in with Facebook is added to your store's sign-in page. How to use Facebook login together with a sign-up form is covered in How to use a sign-up form alongside Shop, Google, and Facebook login. The steps to set up Google login, which works the same way, are in How to set up Google login in Shopify: preparing Google Cloud and setup steps. You can also turn on both Facebook and Google so customers can sign in with either one.

Key points

  • Turning on Facebook login starts from the Authentication section in Settings > Customer accounts in the Shopify admin
  • During setup, you switch between browser tabs for the Shopify admin and the Meta for Developers dashboard, copying and pasting values such as the redirect URL and App ID
  • In Meta for Developers, you create the app, add the Facebook Login use case, add the email permission, and register the redirect URL and Deauthorize URL
  • When customers use social login, the only customer data synced to Shopify is the email address
  • If you've connected your own identity provider to customer accounts, you need to contact the external identity provider to connect social login
