7 ways to use birthdays, addresses, and consent collected at sign-up (Shopify new customer accounts)

In short: You can use the information you collect with a sign-up form for campaigns without any additional apps. Combine it with Shopify's built-in features: customer segments, discounts, Shopify Flow, and Shopify Messaging. This article walks through seven setup examples, with steps, that use the birthdays, addresses, consent, and member types you collect with Howdy.

Key points

  • A birthday-month coupon takes 3 steps: create a customer segment, set it as the discount's eligibility, then schedule the email in Shopify Messaging
  • Shopify Flow can add a birthday-month customer tag automatically
  • You can show a different banner image and message on the account page for each customer tag
  • Address auto-fill from the postal code and address checks at sign-up reduce mistakes in shipping addresses
  • With company detail fields and multiple forms, you can separate business sign-ups from individual sign-ups

Example 1: How do you send a coupon to customers in their birthday month?

Collect the birth month with your sign-up form. Create a discount that only customers in a customer segment can use, then send it with Shopify Messaging.

  1. In Settings > Metafields and metaobjects > Customers, create a definition with the namespace and key custom.birth_month and the type Single line text
  2. In Howdy's sign-up form, add a custom field and enter "January" through "December" as the choices. Each choice must match the values in the definition's validation character for character
  3. In Customers > Segments, create a segment with the condition metafields.custom.birth_month = 'July'
  4. In Discounts, create a discount and choose the segment from step 3 as its eligibility
  5. In Shopify Messaging, choose the Birthday template, link the discount from step 4, and schedule the email to the segment

Before the real send, check with a test customer that the customer is added to the segment and that the email content is right.

Example 2: How do you add a birthday-month customer tag automatically?

If you collect birthdays with the Date type, Shopify Flow can add a birth-month tag automatically at sign-up. Once the tag is added, you can target "customers in their birthday month" in segments, discounts, and email campaigns.

Here's how the Shopify Flow workflow is built.

  1. Trigger: Customer created
  2. Variable: choose the birthday metafield and name the variable birthday
  3. Condition: birthday exists
  4. Action "Run code": take the month from the birthday and output monthTag (for example, July)
  5. Condition: monthTag is not empty
  6. Action "Add customer tags": add {{ runCode.monthTag }}

The workflow runs automatically when a new customer signs up. To tag existing customers all at once, filter them by birth month with customer segments and add the tag with bulk editing.

Example 3: How do you change the account page message for each membership tier?

Place Howdy's banner image on the profile page, and show a different banner image and message for each customer tag. Customers with a VIP tag and new customers with no tag can see different messages.

If you use the birth-month tag (Example 2) and set the condition tag to "July," only customers born in July see the banner.

Example 4: How do you reduce mistakes in shipping addresses?

Turn on address auto-fill in Howdy's General Settings, and the prefecture, city, and town fill in automatically as soon as a customer enters a postal code (for Japanese addresses). Customers only need to enter the street number and building name.

You can also connect the Checkout Address Validator app to check the address format at sign-up. Customers no longer have to re-enter their address after an address error at checkout.

Example 5: How do you record consent to your terms of service?

Create a customer metafield with the True or false type, and make it a required checkbox in Howdy's sign-up form. You can put links in the display label, so if you write it like the example below, customers can open the terms pages in a new tab before agreeing.

I agree to the <a href="URL of your terms of service page" target="_blank"><u>Terms of Service</u></a> and <a href="URL of your privacy policy page" target="_blank"><u>Privacy Policy</u></a>

The consent value is saved to a customer metafield, so you can check whether each customer has agreed on the Customers page.

Example 6: How do you send customers to a campaign page right after sign-up?

You can set where customers are redirected after they submit the sign-up form. You can use different destinations for sign-up and login: for example, a page about the first-order coupon right after a new sign-up, and the page the customer came from right after a login.

Right after sign-up is when customers are most likely to look at a page. Putting your member benefits or a collection of recommended products there shortens the time from sign-up to first purchase.

Example 7: How do you separate sign-ups from business customers?

Create multiple sign-up forms and specify a form ID for each link to control which form opens. For example, the business form can have fields for company name, department, and contact name, while the individual form can have fields for birthdays and preferences.

You can show the company details you collect on the profile page as a company metafield block. It becomes a page where B2B customers can check and update their own company details.
